Switzerland or Kyrgyzstan: where can you film an Alpine look for less?

A 12-hour shooting day with a crew of 13 and a standard ARRI Alexa Mini LF package costs about $17,000 in Switzerland and $2,600 in Kyrgyzstan, 6.5 times less (October 2026). Spruce gorges, glaciers and turquoise lakes start 40 km from Bishkek; what Kyrgyzstan cannot replace are Swiss chalet villages, cable cars and mountain railways.

The short answer

When a script needs 'the Alps' rather than a specific Swiss town, the frame is usually spruce forest, a fast river, green meadows and glaciers above. The northern Tian Shan gives exactly this: Ala-Archa gorge is 40 km from Bishkek, Chon-Kemin and the Karakol valleys add long alpine meadows and dense spruce.

Switzerland stays unbeatable for recognisable places: Zermatt under the Matterhorn, mountain railways and cable cars, lakeside cities. Its FiSS support of 20-50% applies only to official Swiss co-productions, so a purely foreign shoot usually pays full Swiss rates: a crew of 13 costs $11,100 a day there against $1,500 in Kyrgyzstan.

When Switzerland is the better choice

  • Recognisable Alpine resorts and chalet villages such as car-free Zermatt below the Matterhorn.
  • Cable cars and mountain railways that lift a crew to 3,000-3,900 m in minutes (Jungfraujoch, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Gornergrat).
  • Location in the middle of Europe, inside Schengen, with one of Europe's densest rail networks.
  • FiSS support of 20-50% for official Swiss co-productions (not for purely foreign service shoots).

Getting there and working there

There are no direct flights between the EU and Bishkek yet (Kyrgyz airlines were removed from the EU air safety list in June 2026, first routes are planned for 2027), so European crews connect through Istanbul (about 5 h 10 min to Bishkek with Turkish Airlines or Pegasus) or Dubai (about 4 h 45 min with flydubai). Citizens of the EU, the UK, the USA, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland enter Kyrgyzstan visa-free for 30 days in every 60-day period.

The northern Tian Shan locations sit one to three hours from Bishkek, so a unit can stay in the city and shoot alpine scenes as day trips. Kyrgyzstan is not part of the ATA Carnet system, so bringing a full camera package means a separate temporary import procedure. Most crews rent the camera, lenses, lighting and grip in Bishkek and bring only personal kit.
