Patagonia or Kyrgyzstan: where to film granite walls, glacier lakes and empty steppe?

A 12-hour shooting day with a crew of 13 and a standard ARRI Alexa Mini LF package costs about $5,400 in Argentina (Buenos Aires rates) and $2,600 in Kyrgyzstan, 2.1 times less (October 2026). Patagonia keeps what no mountain country in Asia has: glaciers calving into lakes, the Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine spires, fjords and sea life. For granite big walls, canyon lakes and wind-swept high steppe, the Turkestan Range and the inner Tian Shan are a closer, cheaper option.

The short answer

Climbers call the Karavshin gorge in Batken the 'Asian Patagonia' for its monolithic granite walls above wild rivers. Around it Kyrgyzstan adds lakes in steep canyons such as Kel-Suu, high crescent lakes such as Ay-Kul, glaciers within 40 km of Bishkek and long grassy valleys at 2,000-3,000 m that read as Patagonian steppe.

Distance is part of the cost. Patagonia's key locations are far from the capitals: El Calafate is more than 2,400 km from Buenos Aires (about 3 h 15 min by air) and Puerto Natales is 247 km from Punta Arenas. In Kyrgyzstan the farthest locations are 10-12 hours by road from Bishkek and most are 1-6 hours, and a crew of 13 costs $1,500 a day against $3,600 in Argentina.

This program offers an attractive incentive for international productions, providing a reimbursement of up to 30% of qualified expenses, capped at US$3 million, incurred within the country, and 40% for those productions that are made entirely in regions outside the Metropolitan region.

When Argentina is the better choice

  • Glaciers calving into a lake: Upsala, Onelli and Perito Moreno calve into Lago Argentino in Los Glaciares National Park (UNESCO).
  • The granite spires of Monte Fitz Roy (3,405 m) and Torres del Paine.
  • Pacific fjords and a tidewater glacier at Laguna San Rafael in Chile.
  • Sea life: penguin colonies on Isla Magdalena and whales, elephant seals and orcas at Península Valdés (UNESCO).
  • On the Chilean side, the IFI Audiovisual programme has offered refunds of up to 30% of qualified spend in Chile and 40% outside the Santiago Metropolitan Region in its 2024 and 2025 calls; whether a call is open must be checked each year.

Getting there and working there

Bishkek has direct flights from Istanbul (about 5 h 10 min with Turkish Airlines or Pegasus) and Dubai (about 4 h 45 min with flydubai); there are no direct flights from the EU or the Americas yet. Citizens of the EU, the UK and the USA enter Kyrgyzstan visa-free for 30 days in every 60-day period.

Batken and the Turkestan Range are the farthest part of the country, 11-13 hours by road from Bishkek or reached via Osh, so those locations are planned as a separate block; Kel-Suu, Ala-Archa and Suusamyr fit a schedule based in Bishkek or Naryn. Kyrgyzstan is not part of the ATA Carnet system, so most crews rent the camera, lenses and lighting in Bishkek.

Frequently asked questions

01Is Kyrgyzstan cheaper than Patagonia for filming?

Yes: about $2,600 for a 12-hour day with a crew of 13 and a standard package in Kyrgyzstan against $5,400 in Argentina at Buenos Aires rates (October 2026), before the domestic travel Patagonia adds.

02Where in Kyrgyzstan looks like Patagonia?

The Karavshin gorge in Batken with its granite walls, Kel-Suu lake in a sheer canyon, Ay-Kul and Ala-Kul lakes, and the Suusamyr valley for wind-swept steppe.

03Does Argentina offer a film rebate for Patagonia?

We found no national Argentine rebate for foreign productions; the BA Producción Internacional programme refunds up to 25% only for spend in the City of Buenos Aires. Chile's IFI Audiovisual calls of 2024 and 2025 offered 40% outside the Santiago region.
